Island Retreat

A light-filled summer haven

This client was lucky to have a beautiful piece of land that had been in his family for many years, and he wanted to build a dream summer home. The remote location of this small site off the west coast of Ireland meant that this home had to be as self-sustaining and environmentally efficient as possible.

With that in mind, the windows were integral to the design to achieve maximum solar gain: clean and chunky 144mm x 69mm sections in Iroko timber, with a natural stain finish. The stairs were designed with a simple steel centre spline, each tread clad in matching Iroko and balustrades that run continuously through one and a half stories of the house. The internal doors stretch from floor to ceiling, simply designed, without a traditional frame.

Working together with the architect, we helped to create a stunning contemporary home that blends beautifully into its island setting.
